 EHTHERAZ app

All citizens and residents are obliged to install the Ehteras app on their smartphones when they leave home for any reason, ”a government-run news agency QNA disclosed in a tweet.  "This decision will take effect from Friday, May 22, 2020 until further notice."

Ehteras, which was introduced in April, was designed to let people know if they are in close contact with anyone who has been exposed to COVID-19.  Installing the app was initially optional, but the government changed the tune.

The move is part of larger lockdown measures that include limiting the number of people in vehicles (in some cases to a maximum of three) and closing all unnecessary shops.  Anyone who fails to meet these requirements will face up to three years in prison and a fine of up to R200,000 (about $ 55,000).

According to Google Play data, Ehteras has been downloaded more than 100,000 times on Android alone.  The app is also available on iOS, but Apple does not share download data in its App Store.

Ehteras has received criticism from concerned users about their privacy.  Among other things, the app collects location data and demands access to users' media files, which seem to be overreaching.

For those wondering what data the app collects, here is the full list of permissions:

  •  Position
  •  Approximate location (network based)
  •  Accurate location (GPS and network based)
  •  Phone
  •  Call directly to phone numbers

"Why does this app [sic] want to access my photos, media and phone," one user asked on Google Play.  “I only accept the location.  I get it all, if its not rational for me its [sic] doesn't work.  So I will not use it unless it respects my privacy.  ”
